Halcrow is designing the Phase 1 reclamation of the 80 ha steelworks site at Ebbw Vale.

The reclamation works will establish plateaux levels for development and a wetland park area.

The scheme includes:

• a geotechnical and geo-environmental assessment covering numerous mine entries
• two former gas works
• a coke works
• extensive basement complexes

Clean up criteria have been developed for the site and the first stage of bioremediation has been completed.

The assessment of the site also includes the identification of mining hazards and potential surface instability zones.
