Hungary Flood Control Development and Rehabilitation Project, Feasibility Study
Approximately 21000ha of flood plain basins in Hungary are protected from flooding by some 4000km of levees up to 6m in height.
The objective of the project is to:
 |
develop methodologies for assessment of levee safety against failure caused by river floods |
 |
assess the damages caused in each of the 150 No. flood plain basins and the benefits of flood protection |
Various methods of financing flood protection were investigated and the methods used in different countries assessed including flood insurance systems. The most appropriate method for adoption in Hungary will be formulated.
Methods for assessment of losses in floods using methodologies developed in the study, damage indicators and IGS systems were developed and applied to pilot flood plain basins. The cost of flood protection in Hungary was calculated and essential works prioritised.
Public awareness was assessed and willingness and ability of the population to pay for improved levels of protection.
