At a cost of £60,000 the Halcrow Foundation has organised the construction of 29 houses in Galle, Sri Lanka, for people made homeless in the tsunami.

The foundation has directly financed 17 houses and has teamed up with the Erach and Roshan Sadri Foundation (ERSF) to provide funding for a further 12 homes. Another five houses – to be funded by the ERSF – is under consideration.

Once built, the houses are given to local families who don’t have the resources to finance a new home and have been unable to obtain assistance from the government or from another charity or non-governmental organisation.
Project sponsor Baghi Baghirathan has worked closely with Fr Bede Silva, a priest in Galle, to plan, manage and monitor the scheme.

The Halcrow Foundation teamed up with the ERSF after it was approached by a former Halcrow employee who is now a trustee at the ERSF. The ERSF was founded in August 2005, a year on from the untimely death of Roshan Sadri. Its purpose is to execute the terms of her will to use her legacy for charitable purposes.
