Following a review of the first generation Shoreline Management Plans, DEFRA commissioned a group led by Halcrow to undertake the current research project to improve understanding of the major natural influences upon evolution over the next century for the open coastline of England and Wales.
Futurecoast provides predictions of coastal evolutionary tendencies over the next century, which are to be considered in the updating of SMPs and other strategic plans targeted at determining broad-scale future coastal defence policy throughout the open coast shoreline of England and Wales.
