Technical description

Establishment of DMAs and pilot study for reduction of non revenue water. Technical analysis of the distribution system, design of DMAs and leakage reduction exercise.

Details

Once a village, Paralimni has grown into a small town and supports the nearby tourist resorts of Protaras and Pernera that are both within the municipality boundary. There has been a considerable amount of development for tourist accommodation in recent years.

By reducing the amount of NRW i.e. real and apparent losses, additional water can be made available for supply in Paralimni. This would improve levels of service and also the management of the distribution system and water resources.

Water resources in Paralimni are limited and peak demands in the summer months of July to September have, in the past, led to rationing and due leaks and bursts on the distribution system, a non-revenue water problem has developed.

This is despite a strategy by the Municipality to take prompt action to repair visible leaks. Consequently, this project offers the Municipality a means by which water losses can be further reduced and customer service levels enhanced.

This objective can be achieved by the introduction of NRW water analysis and management, modern leak detection techniques and possibly also the use of pressure management.
