  Technical description

Halcrow was commissioned by Defence Estates to design a new water distribution system to cater for operational and domestic demands. A hydraulic model was built to design the proposed network.

In particular large fire fighting demands were required and these had to be incorporated in the model with hydrants positioned to meet specific design requirements. Water quality modelling was undertaken for the proposed network due to the low demands on the system at times other than fire fighting.

Full account needed to be taken of environmental issues at Lakenheath due to important ecological and archaeological assets. Halcrow incorporated these aspects into the design and contract and produced an Ecological Report to support the planning application

A detailed design report and associated drawings were produced. Halcrow advised on the contract strategy for the scheme and tender documents were produced based on the GC Works 1 Conditions of Contract. The design and tender documentation incorporated the Client’s operational requirements.

Halcrow managed the tendering process and are currently undertaking site supervision and acting as Project Manager for the implementation.

The scheme comprises:

24Km of 200-400mm main

3.9Km of service pipe
142 American above ground style hydrants

In addition, a feasibility study has been undertaken for the “Townside” of the Base.
