Halcrow was commissioned to upgrade an existing highway and construct new dual carriageways, service roads, roundabouts and associated services.

The road linking Sharjah on the north coast of the UAE to Kalba on the south coast is 110 km in length.

The first section is through mainly desert for about 55 km and then through mountains. The road includes the tunnel at Gillay, a 1.2km single carriageway bi-directional road tunnel.

The tunnel has an overall width of 13.5m and height of 9.7m, with a total excavated face area of 110m2, it is 1170m long accommodates a single carriageway, two-lane road.
