Added value:
Yorkshire Water Services has awarded a Halcrow Laing O’Rourke team the contract to design and construct one of the largest wastewater treatment works in the UK, Knostrop wastewater treatment works in Leeds.
This strategically-important contract is the most significant project under Halcrow’s design-construct framework arrangement with the company. It follows on from the award of the Nutwell water treatment works and is an important step in the water and utilities business group’s design and build initiative.
Knostrop serves the equivalent of 1.1 million people and is a flagship project in Yorkshire Water’s 2005-2009 capital investment programme. The treatment works will be upgraded to provide an enhanced level of treatment ensuring compliance with revised effluent discharge consent standards imposed under the European Union Freshwater Fisheries Directive.
As well as a new activated sludge plant (ASP), a sequencing batch reactor will be converted into an ASP and an existing ASP will be refurbished. The principal structures to be designed are two 100m x 60m x 7m deep water retaining, reinforced concrete tanks, eight 40m diameter final settlement tanks, a grit removal and washing system, in addition to various pumping stations, chambers and pipelines.
Innovation:
Recognising the high profile of the project, the key stakeholders involved have established the Knostrop delivery team (KDT) to oversee the successful implementation of the works at Knostrop and ensure the project is a success. The team has produced a project specific business plan that establishes a series of aims and targets to be achieved. Progress against the business plan is reviewed quarterly.
Team work:
Halcrow are providing detailed design services, with civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation, control and automation services provided by teams in Manchester and Leeds, in addition to a site-based team working in close partnership with Laing O’Rourke and Yorkshire Water. The design team is also supported by our process unit in Crawley and a structural design and detailing team in Islamabad.
