Halcrow has been appointed as consultant for the overall regeneration of 240 hectares of part of the former Llanwern steelworks near Newport, South Wales.
Parts of the site were previously occupied by a coking works and a benzole refinery, resulting in localised contamination of the groundwater underlying the site.
Halcrow’s geo-environmental team designed and supervised intrusive ground investigations. Quantitative groundwater risk assessment and clean up criteria have been derived and an outline remediation strategy prepared.
Halcrow’s commission also includes a study on the feasibility of re-using existing piled foundations to provide a sustainable approach to dealing with the geotechnically-challenging alluvial materials at the site.
