RWE npower has been evaluating a proposed Power Station at Milford Haven which would require a 2.9km long 450mm diameter steel gas pipeline to be laid beneath the Haven.

The Haven has a large tidal range and is a busy shipping channel, it is also a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and in parts a SSSI. These environmental factors, combined with the deep channel, meant that horizontal directional drilling (HDD) was the only practical installation method.

Halcrow's role included a feasibility study and assistance to the client in the concept design of the HDD installation, advice on the planning and tender documents for the site investigations (land based boreholes and marine geophysics), and for the main pipeline works, advice on contract documentation and tender assessment.
