In March 1997, the Panama
Ports Company SA appointed
Halcrow to provide consulting
engineering services in
connection with the
development of a 350m long
deep-water berth for
post-Panamax container
vessels, at the Port of Balboa,
Panama.
The initial phase of the Scope
of Services to be carried out
under Halcrow's Consultancy
Agreement, required that a
condition survey, including
quay structures and services,
be carried out and a report
produced on existing facilities.
In addition, there was a
requirement for an advance
report on the suitability or
otherwise of Berths 14 and 15
for upgrading to a deep water
(-16m) berth.

The Port of Cristobal is
located at the Atlantic
Entrance of the Panama
Canal. Panama Ports
Company SA (PPC) was a 25
year concession agreement
for the development,
construction, operation,
administration and
management of the port.
Halcrow was commissioned to
undertake an extensive data
collection exercise, detailed
site inspections of existing
infrastructure, pavements and
services, material testing and
preparation of a feasibility
study report for the
development of the existing
container terminal at Cristobal.
