Scope:
The Pilcomayo basin occupies 270,000 km2 over three countries: Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. This EC funded project consists in a multidisciplinary baseline study of the entire catchment that aims at assessing the current ecological, morphological and socio-economic status with an insight into the relevant processes that contributed to the current situation of the basin. Key disciplines are: geology and geomorphology, water quality, fisheries, water resources and stakeholder participation. The Pilcomayo catchment has two outstanding features: the heavy sediment load that carries has contributed to a very fast blockage and lateral migration of the river, and the wide spectrum of stakeholders, including more than 20 different types of indians.
