Halcrow was commissioned to carry out a thermal analysis to simulate casting of precast concrete units for a 0.9km long immersed tube tunnel and to design measures to control early-age thermal cracking.
A link between Preveza and Aktio was to be formed across the Gulf of Amvrakikos in north-western Greece using a 0.9km immersed tube tunnel. A key requirement for the serviceability of the tunnel was the control of any early-age thermal cracking in order to prevent water ingress into the tunnel and deterioration of the 130m long reinforced concrete precast units.
Scope
To provide an 0.9km immersed tube tunnel across the gulf of Amvrakikos in north-western Greece.
Benefit to client
Thermal modelling provided measures against early-age thermal cracking including the design for an embedded cooling circuit.
