The government published its policy for renewable energy in February 2000 following an extensive consultation exercise. The main objective of this policy is to increase the contribution of electricity supplied by renewables from the current 3% to 5% by the end of 2003 and to 10% by 2010. In order to understand how this increase in renewable generating capacity may be achieved, the Government Offices for the Regions have been asked to undertake regional resource assessments.

Scope

Halcrow undertook the assessment of the deliverable renewable energy resources for the West Midlands Region of England, which includes the counties of Staffordshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands conurbation in order to inform the emerging strategic planning policy framework. The assessments have the key aim of illustrating how the region may contribute toward the national targets.
