The port is to serve an aluminium smelter, a petrochemical project, a refinery and other industrial developments in the northern part of Oman.

The site for the port is fully exposed to the open sea and is on a low-lying sandy coastline.

Halcrow undertook mathematical modelling of the wave action inside the breakwaters and adjusted the layout of the harbour entrance to provide satisfactory protection for cargo handling at the berths. Halcrow then prepared tender documents and supervised construction.
