Halcrow is working with Southend Borough Council to provide flood defence improvements for the town. The work to date has entailed ground investigations, numerical modelling, environmental fieldwork, environmental impact assessment, detailed design, contract documentation and site supervision.

Key factors that have had to be considered are:

	The potential for flooding of 900 residential and commercial properties
	An important amenity beach
	Mudflats forming part of a Special Protection Area
	Concerns regarding sustainability of timber sources in construction
	Potential for contamination from a gas works near to the frontage
	Non-destructive testing methods used in voids investigations
