about us
Halcrow specialises in the provision of planning, design
and management services for infrastructure development worldwide. With
interests in transportation, water, maritime and property, the company is undertaking
commissions in over 70 countries from a network of more than 70 offices.
We place considerable emphasis on developing our capabilities
in line with the needs of our clients by placing them at the centre of
our operations - by taking an extra step and trying to behave as if we
are stakeholders in their business. To enhance the way we deliver our
projects, we invest heavily in the systems to support our clients, and
are committed to staff training, quality, and developing appropriate
IT infrastructure.
Our internal infrastructure enables us to develop project teams to precisely match the needs of our clients. With an integrated approach, we are able to draw from the pool of skills and experience throughout the whole company and benefit from the flow of knowledge and people around the business.
corporate responsibility
At the heart of our business lies our purpose – to sustain and improve the quality of people’s lives. You’ll see our commitment to this reflected both in the type of work we do and in the way we behave on a wider basis towards our employees and the communities we live in.
We take a broad view of CR and embrace a large number of activities ranging from small one-off events inspired by individual employees to large, sustained projects such as the Halcrow Foundation. As the foundation matures, we aim to provide a CR programme which goes beyond individual projects and acts of giving to much longer-term involvement with communities. We feel that depth of relationship has more substance and meaning for everyone concerned and will ultimately lead to greater benefit.
We’ll be regularly publishing new material on this site to keep you up to speed with what we’re doing. In the meantime, you can learn about some of the things we’ve done so far by looking through our corporate report and reading the Connections stories we’ve published.
Halcrow Foundation
The Halcrow Foundation’s vision is to bring tangible and sustainable improvements to the lives of people in need by mobilising the goodwill and expertise of Halcrow employees and people associated with the company or the charity.
It aims to alleviate poverty and suffering around the world caused by natural disaster or as a result of people’s social and economic conditions. It does this through the development of education, health and other social services, the improvement of transport infrastructure, water supplies and other communal facilities and the promotion of self help activities.
Having been operational since January 2005, the Halcrow Foundation gained charitable status in the UK on 9 August 2006. It is registered charity number 1115729.
Halcrow donates half a per cent of its annual profits
to the foundation, as well as making a significant contribution in terms
of people’s time and its resources. Halcrow’s employees also
raise funds through a range of activities, such as sponsored walks, raffles
and cake sales, as well as donating money directly. The general public
are welcome to make a donation to support the foundation's work.

history
Halcrow is one of the UK's leading consultancies, with a pedigree stretching
back to 1868. The company's founder, Thomas Meik, worked extensively on port,
maritime and railway projects in northern England and Scotland. During the
first half of the 20th Century, William Halcrow (later Sir William) established
the firm as a pioneering force in other areas, notably tunneling. Halcrow's
first commissions outside of the UK were undertaken in the 1890s. In the
year 2004, projects undertaken outside the UK accounted for approximately 40% of
turnover.
Initially named after Thomas Meik, the firm became Sir William Halcrow and Partners in 1941. In 1985, a private limited company bearing the same name was formed. The most recent change was in 1998, when the various Halcrow businesses and departments became Halcrow Group Limited.
