ISIS-TUFLOW
The ISIS-TUFLOW link has been developed to enable models built in ISIS 1D to be dynamically linked to the TUFLOW 2D modelling package. The link was developed through close collaboration between Halcrow and WBM (the developers of TUFLOW).
Existing ISIS models may be converted to ISIS-TUFLOW models with little or no amendment to the ISIS model, and minimal addition to the TUFLOW model. Models constructed in ISIS-TUFLOW build on the well proven track record of the separate ISIS and TUFLOW modelling software.

ISIS may be linked to TUFLOW via HX and SX boundaries so that level or flow information can be exchanged between the two models; if flow is passed from ISIS to TUFLOW, water level will be passed from TUFLOW to ISIS, and vice versa. Exchange information will occur at each multiple of the common timestep.
The ISIS 1D model can be linked to multiple TUFLOW 2D domains and each 2D domain can have a different time step and resolutions. Standard ISIS floodplain modelling approaches, such as extended sections and floodcells (reservoir units), can be used alongside TUFLOW 2D domains - this provides the user with great flexibility in producing an integrated model using the most appropriate modelling method for different parts of the floodplain.
Since the first version of the ISIS-TUFLOW link in 2004, the software has been updated to meet the evolving needs of modellers. Recent enhancements include the ability to use a different computation time step in ISIS compared to that used in TUFLOW. A further recent enhancement is the addition of a corrector timestep in ISIS to improve model stability.
The ISIS-TUFLOW link capability is provided as an add-on to existing licences of both ISIS Professional and TUFLOW. To purchase the ISIS-TUFLOW link, please contact us.
Benefits of using ISIS-TUFLOW
- An existing ISIS model is fully compatible with the linked model.
- Combines the capability of ISIS for dealing with structures and that of TUFLOW for dealing with rapid flooding and drying processes, both of which are critical to the accuracy of flood prediction.
- Existing 1D ISIS and 2D TUFLOW models are quickly and easily converted for use in ISIS-TUFLOW.
Applications include
- Urban flooding
- River flooding
- Estuarine flooding
- Dam break inundation
