ISIS by Halcrow > TUFLOW - Flood and Tide Simulation Software

TUFLOW

Halcrow is the sole UK based agents for BMT WBM’s TUFLOW software. By purchasing TUFLOW from Halcrow, users benefit from having access to Halcrow’s UK based support team, in addition to the services provided by BMT WBM – all at no extra cost!

TUFLOW models flooding in major rivers through to complex overland and piped urban flows; estuarine and coastal tide hydraulics; and storm tide inundation.

TUFLOW is a one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) flood and tide simulation software. It simulates the complex hydrodynamics of floods and tides using the full 1D St Venant equations and full 2D free-surface shallow water equations.

TUFLOW’s 2D solution is based on the Stelling finite difference, alternating direction implicit (ADI) scheme that solves the full 2D free surface shallow water flow equations over a regular grid. The 1D scheme is a finite difference, second-order, Runge Kutta solution.

The schemes have been improved to handle upstream controlled flow regimes (e.g. supercritical and weir flow), bridge decks, box culverts, robust wetting and drying, and other key features.

The dynamic linking capability between domains is a major strength of TUFLOW. With the adaptation of TUFLOW to floodplain modelling, more flexible and complex linking was developed. The advanced linking functions have been extensively applied to a wide range of models varying from major river systems to fine-scale urban flood models to coastal storm tide inundation.

TUFLOW outputs SMS and GIS formatted files containing a variety of data, such as water levels, velocity vectors, depths, unit flow vectors, energy level, flood hazard categories, Froude number and other data types. The user can readily:

TUFLOW Modules

ISIS-TUFLOW-PIPE link
The ISIS-TUFLOW-PIPE link has been developed to enable models built in ISIS Professional (1D) to be dynamically linked to TUFLOW and its 1D component ESTRY, offering unparalleled performance in linked hydraulic modelling. In addition, the user can produce flood maps and animated flood sequences in TUFLOW using ISIS Mapper (available for free)

Multiple 2D domains
Multiple 2D Domains (M2D) Module allows any number of 2D domains of different cell size and orientation to be built into a model. The 2D domains can be linked by 1D domains, or via the 2D/2D linking feature. Each domain can be of different cell size, orientation and extent.

For example, a 1D domain of a river system may have several 2D domains embedded to represent several townships where a more detailed 2D analysis is required. Another scenario is to use a coarser 2D grid linking to a finer resolution 2D domain over the area of interest. 1D elements can link between the different 2D domains, for example, an underlying pipe network can be linked to any number of different 2D domains.

MapInfo and TUFLOW productivity tools (miTools)
miTools have been developed specifically to improve the efficiency of setting up and reviewing TUFLOW models, as well as improving the day to day ease of using MapInfo Professional (MI Pro). The suite of utilities enables ‘automation’ of many of the common repetitive tasks, saving valuable time and therefore money. The utilities also allow the efficient creation and visualisation of key TUFLOW model inputs/outputs within the MapInfo environment. Other tools provide data checking and quality assurance functionality, thus helping to minimise modelling errors.

Advection Dispersion
TUFLOW AD (Advection Dispersion) is a module for simulating depth-averaged, two and one-dimensional constituent fate and transport. Both dissolved and particulate constituents can be simulated.

TUFLOW AD takes depth and velocity fields computed by the TUFLOW and ESTRY engines and uses this information, together with initial and boundary conditions, to simulate the advection and dispersion of constituents. TUFLOW AD is specifically oriented towards such analyses in systems including coastal waters, estuaries, rivers, floodplains and urban areas.

Applications include

  • flooding in major rivers
  • complex overland and piped urban flows
  • storm tide inundation of coastal plains
  • estuarine and coastal tidal hydraulics.

Benefits of using ISIS-TUFLOW
