King Kong basemap for WETA Digital

When WETA, the famed New Zealand production company, needed accurate data about NYC buildings circa 1933 to support the construction of computer-modeled buildings for the great ape to climb, they turned to the metropolitan region's richest source of geographic data: CommunityCartography.

arrow Data sources Real estate table, taxlots, building footprints
arrow Client objective To create a 3d model of New York as it appeared in 1933 for Peter Jackson's film, King Kong.
arrow Map outcome A digital vector basemap was created, with one layer showing building age, and another showing building class.
arrow Client benefit The basemap showed which buildings existed during the period of the film. These building footprints were extruded into 3D models, and details added from archival photographs. The Deluxe Extended Edition DVD includes a fantastic documentary describing the process of creating their digital city.
