High Speed 1 wins Supreme Award

High Speed 1 (Section 2) has been awarded the ‘Judges’ Supreme Award’ in addition to winning the ‘Project over £50M’ category at the Quality in Construction Awards in London.

Rail Link Engineering (RLE), a consortium of Arup, Bechtel, Halcrow and Systra, responsible for the design and project management of HS1, collected the award along with representatives from client - Union Railways/ London & Continental Railways.

High Speed 1 wins ‘Project of the Decade’ award

High Speed 1 (HS1), has been awarded the title of ‘Project of the Decade’ at the London Transport Awards. Held at the Hilton on Park Lane on the 27th February 2008, the event celebrates the many transport achievements across the capital.
Rail Link Engineering (RLE), the consortium responsible for managing delivery of HS1, collected the special award on behalf of London & Continental Railways, the company behind HS1. RLE a consortium of Arup, Bechtel, Halcrow and Systra has been responsible for the design and project management of HS1. Working on behalf of London & Continental Railways, RLE represents the very best in engineering excellence.

BBC to show “The 800 Million Pound Railway Station” documentary   

Film makers from the UK’s BBC2 have been following the development of High Speed 1, the UK’s first high-speed rail line.

“The 800 Million Pound Railway Station” series tells the story of the architects, engineers and spin doctors who entered a frantic two year race to make the Royal Opening on time. The series portrays this heroic undertaking in a compelling way and with a dramatic perspective on a number of the many individual’s that have contributed to this amazing project.

The Queen launches High Speed 1

The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, formally launched High Speed 1 (HS1), the UK’s first section of high speed railway and officially opened St Pancras International Station, on Tuesday 6 November.

The Royal Party sat on specially built platforms beneath the Barlow Trainshed roof and delivered an address to an invited audience of over 1,000 guests including senior political figures from London, the UK and Europe. A state of the art light, sound and film show was accompanied by music from the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and UK singing stars Lemar and Katherine Jenkins.

RLE releases “The Journey” -
a unique engineering route map

RLE, the consortium of Arup, Bechtel, Halcrow and Systra has released “The Journey”, a unique engineering route map for High Speed 1. RLE has been responsible for the design and project management of HS1. Working on behalf of London Continental Railways, RLE represents the very best in engineering excellence.

Produced in association with the UK’s New Civil Engineer (NCE) magazine, The Journey takes you on an engineering voyage of discovery.

From 14 November 2007, it will take just two hours 15 minutes to get from London to Paris by train, after the second section of High Speed 1, opens. It will take a Eurostar train only 31 minutes to reach Folkestone from St Pancras, shaving 15 minutes off the journey time.

High Speed 1 (HS1) has been hailed by industry and Government as a magnificent engineering achievement and a beacon of technical excellence.

High Speed 1 - a magnificent engineering achievement

High Speed 1 (HS1) has today been hailed by industry and Government as a magnificent engineering achievement and a beacon of technical excellence.

Congratulating Rail Link Engineering (RLE), the consortium responsible for managing delivery of HS1, for its achievements, Rail Minister, Tom Harris said:

“This landmark project is a demonstration of how passengers can benefit from a combination of Government investment and private sector delivery. I congratulate all those who have been involved in successfully constructing this magnificent new railway on time and within budget.”

John Armitt CBE, Chair of the Olympic Delivery Authority who is due to speak at an RLE event later this week said:

“High Speed 1 is a remarkable engineering achievement and a testament to the skills and dedication of all the teams involved.  As this landmark project approaches its final run in, it offers an inspiring example of the construction industry’s ability to deliver large, complex projects on time and within budget.”

Platform Appeal to raise funds for railway children in India

A major new charity appeal, aimed exclusively at the rail industry and the organisations and people working within it, is being launched later this week by Railway Children - the charity that works to prevent the abuse of children on the streets both in the UK and overseas.

The Railway Children Platform Appeal is being launched at a celebration of engineering excellence in the delivery of High Speed 1 - the UK’s first high-speed rail link - hosted by the Rail Link Engineering. The event is being held at London’s St Pancras station.

RLE is pleased to support the Railway Children’s Platform Appeal. The railway industry has shown a commitment to the Railway Children’s work for many years. The charity has demonstrated its commitment to improving the quality of life for children in the UK and overseas. We fully support the Platform Appeal and encourage the rail community to help the Railway Children alleviate the suffering endured by street children throughout the world.
