SANDS Graphing

The Graphing facility in SANDS allows Time-Series Data to be stored, retrieved and inspected. Time-series data is defined as data that is recorded over time. Data stored in SANDS that can be graphed is displayed in a tabular form that can be sorted to find specific types of data.

Examples of the graphing outputs are from wave recorders, tidal predictions, model output, and telemetry station records.

Due to the shear volume of data involved with time-series data, it is loaded into SANDS via an automated import routine. SANDS holds many of these imports covering the standard and common data formats (e.g. UK Meteorological Office and Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory formats).

Once imported, data can be filtered, for example by date or type, then retrieved or graphed. The ability to graph data serves as part of the data checking process. For example it is immediately obvious if any ‘rouge’ wave heights exist in wave data when viewing and comparing modelled and recorded wave data using this facility.

Only time-series data will be stored and accessed via the Graphing facility. Where time-series data has been produced within SANDS as the product of a wave analysis calculation, the resultant data will also be recorded under the graphing menu.

It is likely that the SANDS user will wish to analyse the data stored in the Graph. For more information on this, please see the section on Time-Series Analysis. For more information on the data formats that can be imported and exported in to SANDS, please see the Data Import and Export section.
